The concept

A dinner that moves

No fixed seating plan, no long sit-down. Your guests walk, mingle and taste. We bring around six to eight small courses at a brisk pace. Large groups fit effortlessly into a compact space and everyone has eaten within two hours, with more variety than a classic set menu. Staff, tableware and the complete culinary experience: we take care of everything.

What is a walking dinner?

A dinner that comes to your guests

walking dinner
[ˈwɔːkɪŋ ˈdɪnər] (noun)

Dinner without a fixed seating plan, in which waiting staff serve a series of small courses to standing and circulating guests.

A walking dinner is a dinner without a fixed seating plan, in which waiting staff serve six to eight small courses while your guests stand, move around and talk to one another. Every dish is composed so that it can be eaten standing up, with nothing more than a fork or a spoon.

That is what sets it apart from a buffet, where your guests collect a plate themselves and then sit down. At a walking dinner the food comes to the guest, at a rhythm of roughly one course every twenty minutes. The evening keeps moving, and nobody spends two hours beside the same two people.

A walking dinner from Chef de Parties starts at €44.50 per person for six courses, including chefs, waiting staff and tableware. We cater walking dinners from 25 guests, out of Rotterdam and throughout the Netherlands.

Is it right for your evening?

When a walking dinner works and when it does not

We would rather not sell the format to an evening it does not suit. Here is what a walking dinner is strong at, and what it is not.

/Strong for
  • Corporate events and networking receptions where guests need to talk to each other
  • Receptions and weddings with a mixed group
  • Large groups in a room with no space for tables and chairs
  • Evenings that need to keep running, without the conversation stalling
/Less suitable for
  • A group that is largely unsteady on its feet, where we would advise a seated dinner
  • An evening with speeches or a programme that seats everyone at a table
  • Groups under 25 guests; below that we would rather compose a bespoke menu

Frequently asked questions about the walking dinner

What does a walking dinner cost per person?

A walking dinner with us starts at €44.50 per person for six courses from the Signature menu, rising to €56.50 per person for eight courses from the Prestige menu. That price includes the chefs, the waiting staff, the tableware and the cutlery. We cater a walking dinner from 25 guests.

What do you eat at a walking dinner?

Six to eight small courses, each of which fits on a single plate or in one hand: an amuse-bouche to open, then savoury courses building from light to full, and a dessert to close. Everything is designed to be eaten standing up with a fork or a spoon. No knife is involved.

What is the difference between a walking dinner and a buffet?

At a buffet your guest collects a plate from a central table and then sits down. At a walking dinner every course is served to your guest while they stay standing and circulate. A buffet is one moment where everyone queues at once; a walking dinner is a series of moments that keeps the evening going.

Every year I invite chef Anton from Chef de Parties to cook for my guests, and he always surprises me and them with delicious dishes. After his culinary delights, you won't want to go back to a restaurant.
